'Samantha' what?

It's not often that I'll admit I was wrong—which I attribute to the fact that I'm rarely ever wrong, but that's beside the point. The point is that I was wrong about something, and now I'm swallowing my pride and retracting my original review: I really like "Samantha Who?"

What I snap-judged to be a one-note, whiny sitcom turned out to be a refreshing and delightful (although, I admit, still somewhat mindlessly entertaining) romp. The stories have evolved from the uninspired "am I naughty or nice?" to the more enjoyable questions, like "am I good in bed?" and the super-specific "was I adopted, or just a big fan of musicals?"

Now, I realize that this change of heart was only made possible by my absolute starvation for something (anything!) new to watch on TV, but I don't think my deprivation or desperation has softened my judgmental gaze. There are still moments when I find myself wanting them to shake things up and stop relying on after-school special happy endings. But for the most part, I found the characters more developed and the comedic timing sharper.

When (and if) it returns after the never-ending strke, I'll be adding it to my TiVo's season pass list. Until then, it's just me scouring the amazing abc.com video player for any other new gems I might've overlooked. I suggest you do the same.

'Celebrity Apprentice' makes us ill

What do you get when you throw Donald Trump in a room with Big Pussy, Gene Simmons, heavyweight boxer Lennox Lewis and Omarosa in a room? No, not a fight to the death to see who can kill Omarosa first…it’s the Donald’s latest attempt at seeming important: “Celebrity Apprentice.” Yep, you can vomit now.

'Californication' court

Um, have the Red Hot Chili Peppers been hiding under a rock? Or were they just trying to think of the best way to describe their song “Californication”? (They went with “the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career"—guess “Under the Bridge” meant nothing to them.)

Anthony Kiedis just announced that they’re suing Showtime over their show of the same name, as well as their use of the name Dani California—the title for a 2006 Chili Peppers song—for a character. And yes, we're talking about the hit show that's already wrapped up its first season. Guess somebody doesn’t have ca-ble…

10 Questions: Maulik Pancholy

Have you see our Q&A with Maulik Pancholy? He plays Sanjay on "Weeds" and Jonathan (Jack Donaghy's assistant) on "30 Rock." Those are two of our very favorite shows, and he's now officially one of our very favorite people.

Double the 'Damages'

After several suspect weeks of silence, the folks at FX finally broke the glorious news that we'll be getting not one, but two more seasons of "Damages." Stars Glenn Close, Rose Byrne and Tate Donovan have all signed contracts to reprise their roles, while Ted Danson (whose fate was a little vague after last season's finale) was not mentioned at all. We think the double-deal could mean one of two things: either the creators have a "Lost"-style plan and exit strategy for the deeply mysterious law thriller, or TV-lovin' Close just refused to do another season in renewal limbo. Pondering of the subject any further would come a little too close to looking a gift horse in the mouth, so we digress.

In a perfect, non-writers' strike world, "Damages" will start filming at the beginning of '08, so cross your fingers for an early summer return.

Gilmores: Embarrassingly girlie

Ah, nothing beats that moment when one of your all-time favorite series comes out in a beautifully complete DVD box set. Today should bring us one such moment, with the release of "Gilmore Girls - The Complete Series Collection." But wait...this box set looks funny. Is that a Caboodle? Apparently someone over at Warner Brothers thought it best we remember this classic series with a commemorative make-up kit and Colorforms set. This isn't "The Babysitters' Club," people. This is well-written, entertaining comfort-TV at it's best, and now all of its Y-chromosome possessing devotees have to be accompanied by teenage girls to feel comfortable picking up the set!
There is an easy solution. We propose someone design a nice line of male-friendly "Gilmore" DVD slip covers. Perhaps one in camo? Another with various beer logos? It really shouldn't be that hard to make this look like a tackle box.
